V V Brown - Samson - Samson & Delilah

So I just completed a month long spate of work experience at GLAMOUR.com, the sister website to the magazine (obv). Whilst there, I did quite a few interesting and fun things, including interviewing Mollie King of The Saturdays (who was just SO nice!!!). I also went to an album/film launch of V V Brown's...

V V is a singer from Northampton, whose previous album was mainly upbeat pop music, has gone through (in her own words) a "spiritual transformation", and through this has produced an intense album with a kind of beautiful grace about it. As you can probably tell from the album title, she draws her inspiration from the biblical story of the guy whose hair made him strong, and the mean girl who cut it off and made him weak. V V didn't stop at making an album though; she also got together with the director of some of her music videos, Jessica Hughes, and created a short film - an adaptation of the story, with a couple of the album's songs serving as the background music to the it. She stars as a Geisha in the film for a couple of minutes.

The song has a kind of tribal drum beat to begin with, and there's a hint of synths. She's got a really beautiful tone to her voice; really rich and soulful. The chorus has quite a tribal feel to it as well, which could be to do with her spiritual transformation as there are links between old tribes and spiritualism - fans of Pocahontas know what I'm talking about.

"Samson, I told you
To stay far away and just slick your body right
Delilah, she tricked him
And took all his strength and turned him into the light
He's lost now, so lost now
Everything he stood for has come into the light

Chorus
Oh my God, what I'd give if I just had enough (just had enough)
Hold her tight, grab a sword, I'll get you
Oh my God, what I'd give if I just had enough (just had enough)
What you waiting for? What you waiting for? What you waiting for?
Get up and rise!"

The harmonies are fantastic, and rather sinister. It's a brilliant sound, and it's made even better by the fact that you can really feel her emotion coming through:

"Build up your power
And pull down those buildings and make your body right
Delilah, she cut off your hair
But it's nothing your gaining
You're fighting light, fighting light, fight light"

The chorus then follows this again, which is in turn followed by the middle 8:

"You've been deceived by the one who's the love of your life
And it has changed, now you're strong so just get up and rise"

The chorus rounds up the song after this. I haven't heard all that much of her earlier stuff, but in all honesty I'm perfectly content with this album, and don't feel the need to listen to her debut album. That might be bad journalism but... whatcha gonna do!
