Crystal Fighters - Follow - Star of Love

Crystal Fighters are an up and coming band from London. Haven't heard of them? Nah, neither had I. But you may have heard their music. I found this song on the advert for the new Sony Xperia T phone, you know that one where they're all slamming their phones together and throwing suitcases into the air? The version on the advert is a remix by Benga, but the one I'm talking about here is the album original. Their music has been used in loads of different stuff as well, including Skins and various adverts. They also had one of their first singles put out by Two Door Cinema Club's label, Kitsuné.

This song starts off with this feisty guitar and tambourine combo. It sounds slightly Mexican. Or at least Latino. It's very catchy. Vocals chime in singing the word "follow" in octaves in this very floaty, but slightly threatening manner; like a "don't mess with me" kind of thing. If a song can even convey that from two bars. This is then repeated.

The singing carries on in octaves throughout the song, emphasising this whole sinister but protective feel. The tune is the same thing over and over; I'm making it sound like it might be repetitive and boring, but it ain't! They start off with the line "You're the one I follow", and repeat it quite a few times throughout the song. At this point, I'm thinking actually, to follow someone does not always mean to be physically follow them, it can also mean to be led by or to copy, so maybe that's what they're going for here. Or maybe they're doing the whole double meaning thing which is always fun!

The drums then kick in and fill out the song a bit. Still got that slightly Mexican feel to it. The song flows straight into the chorus without much to distinguish between the two different parts of the song, as if it's following straight on... You see where I'm going with this? HA.

Something else then joins in, I think it's synths? The song has been building up, and with the arrival of the (maybe) synths I just got really excited. This song is so catchy! It made me wanna dance! After this it, the song is stripped right back down to just guitar and slightly echo-ey singing, like the slightly sinister over-protectiveness from before. The drums then join back in, and then the synths, and suddenly we're building back up to the energy of the chorus. This bar treats over and over until it comes to an incredibly abrupt ending.

This is potentially one of those songs where I'll get over it in like a week, but right now I am just loving it! Enjoy :)
