Best Bits: Ellie Goulding - Halcyon

Image
Ellie Goulding is one of the few female artists that I actually listen to. This is a bit depressing, as I feel that, as a female, I should really be listening to more women music artists. The fact is that there are not that many within the indie/alternative genre that I actually like. Muh. Ahh well, we'll get there one day. Back to Ellie. She's a great example of a girl who has done it on her own, something hard to come by these days. Her first album was so awesome that she brought out a second version with a couple more tracks on. The first version, Lights, came out in February 2010, and went straight into the charts at number one. In the US, it stayed around the 100 mark on their Billboard chart until July of this year (2012) when it jumped straight up to number one. As of June this year, it has sold over 1.3 million copies. Fair play to ya, Ellie. Courtesy of: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nrk-p3/4746161317/in/photostream/ This album came out at the beginning of Oct

Hooray For Earth - True Loves - True Loves

Image
This song is the title track for the band Hooray For Earth's debut album. The band are from New York, and appear to be favouring the heavy electronic sound that a lot of bands seem to be moving towards. The first I heard of this band was through the song "No Love" after I heard it on the radio. It's a bit weird, and quite unlike anything I was listening at the time (about a year ago), but I really like it. Click here for the youtube link and here for the Spotify link. So the other day I was thinking it had been a while since I first heard that song, and skimmed through the rest of the album. I have to say, I actually only liked two songs, the two I have already mentioned. But don't let that put you off. These two are real crackers. Both of these songs have something in common; they both have this really heavy, mechanical sound to them. If that sounds a bit confusing, listen to the songs and you'll know what I mean.

Imagine Dragons - Radioactive - Night Visions

Image
I'm sure many of you will be familiar with the work of Stephenie Meyer, i.e author of the Twilight Saga. What you may not have heard of is her second novel, The Host. Let me tell you, it is AMAZING. I'm not even sure why I love this book so much, but I really enjoy sci-fi type things, and this is one of those but also manages to incorporate a love story. Anyway. A film version of this book has been made (which myself and my sister are VERY excited about), although none of the characters are how I imagined them to look. This song is used in the advert for the film.

Seasfire - We Will Wake - We Will Wake EP

Image
Have you ever done that thing where you fall in love with a song so you play it over and over again, but then you get tired of it and end up hating yourself because you ruined it? I do, but I keep on almost doing that with this band! Fortunately, I'll catch myself JUST before it gets to 100 plays and realise, hang on, you're doing that thing again. I've only just learned the self-control to be able to do this. You need to be in the right frame of mind for it though, like if you're in the mood for jumping around or being excited then definitely do not listen to this song at that moment. This song is for being mellow and (yeah, you guessed it) chilled out. If you're feeling either of those things or any other synonyms, do give this song a list

Crystal Fighters - Follow - Star of Love

Image
Crystal Fighters are an up and coming band from London. Haven't heard of them? Nah, neither had I. But you may have heard their music. I found this song on the advert for the new Sony Xperia T phone, you know that one where they're all slamming their phones together and throwing suitcases into the air? The version on the advert is a remix by Benga, but the one I'm talking about here is the album original. Their music has been used in loads of different stuff as well, including Skins and various adverts. They also had one of their first singles put out by Two Door Cinema Club's label, Kitsuné.

The Maccabees - Pelican - Given To The Wild

Image
As you will know if you read this blog (or as you can guess from previous posts if you don't), I went to Beach Break Live this year and absolutely loved it. If you have read it, you'll see that I mention The Maccabees briefly; my opinion was rather on the fence to be honest. I didn't massively care for their performance but nor did I loathe it. So anyway, I'm a fan of their songs " Feel To Follow " and " Went Away ". Take a listen, I've put the Youtube links in with the titles just there. They're really good songs for chillin', which, if you've read my blog before, you'll know I enjoy doing a lot. This song, "Pelican", is a little bit different.

I'm postponing this blog for a while, as I'm gonna be working at the Olympics for the duration, and probs won't have enough time to continue it whilst I'm working there. See yas soon :) Good view

PartyClub - Shake

Image
You will be pleased to know (or not, I mean you might not even care in the slightest) that I found my most recent blog interest NOT ON RADIO 1! Yay! Huzzah for Twitter, the band posted this on their SoundCloud account and linked it to their Twitter account earlier today and I was lucky enough to happen upon it. I'm really buzzing on this song, it's an awesome summer tune (yeah I just said summer tune). I just wanna keep playing it! There are some elements of it that I like, and there are some parts of it that I just wanna hear over and over again. I've got to pace myself though, I always overplay songs that I really like just because I'm excited about it. Slooow it down.

alt-J - Tessellate - An Awesome Wave

Image
alt-J have only really just appeared on the radar in the last few months or so really. Their album, An Awesome Wave, is a big favourite of Radio 1, who have been promoting it quite heavily recently. It's out currently and is DEFINITELY worth a listen. Top tracks for me at the moment are Breezeblocks (the biggy), this track, Tessellate, and Dissolve Me. Another band I like called Seasfire are a bit similar to alt-J, in terms of being a breath of fresh and individual air to most of the stuff in the charts at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna lie and say I don't like chart music because I really do, and yeah I'm sold on the whole dubstep and drum and bass thing at the moment, but it is nice to hear music that isn't buying into that whole shebang for once. Anyway, listen to the song Falling by the band Seasfire, I was literally obsessed with this song for a while. I reckon they're similar because they're both so chilled, and if you listen t

Beach Break Live 2012 - Review

Image
For someone who had never been to any type of music festival before, or indeed camping of any kind whatsoever, I had no idea what to expect from Beach Break Live. It sounded like the perfect combination though - brilliant music, with a healthy mixture of indie type along with dubstep and drum and bass, along with the setting of the beach and my best friends. Obviously though, I knew not to be hopeful for brilliant weather or sunshine, and to expect a whole lot of rain and rank showers.

Ben Howard - Only Love - Every Kingdom

Image
I'll kick things off with an absolutely beautiful song. I know it's not exactly new anymore, but I am just in love with him. Although I do have a Spotify account, I couldn't help buying the album in CD form because... I just wanted it really. Ben Howard has been compared with Ed Sheeran, and whilst I agree that the acoustic guitar style is quite similar, with the complex patterns and the repetition of riffs, I think they are quite different really. Ed Sheeran has sort of become a representative for the youth of today and brings very different musical tastes together, such as grime and indie. His lyrics are very much about everyday battles that people have to face, such as Small Bump , in which he describes the excitement of an unborn baby, only to have the devastation of a miscarriage, echoed in the melancholy undertones throughout the song.

So this is hopefully gonna be a bit like the Radio 1 presenters' Big Thing of the week I guess. Except I'm not a Radio 1 presenter (yet), and I might not stick to the strict "once a week" thing. Basically what I'm aiming to do is start a blog which captures my favourite songs of the moment. I'll analyse them a bit, say why I like them and compare them to other songs. Please bear with me; I've never done a blog before (and I'm quite sure that writing twice in a diary at the age of eight doesn't count). Please also note that a lot of the music on my most listened to Spotify playlist, the "Starred", is probably directly descended from Radio 1's music, with a branch of the family tree coming from my own family's influences. Enjoy!
